Day 9

HIIT 1: Power
Wow. That was intense. I'm getting strong, and I can tell it in some of these workouts. The reason I can tell this is because I'm able to bring it a bit more intense than I have been during week 1. I increased the weight for the workout from 7.5 lb. dumbbells to 10 lb. During the workout I definitely fatigued, to the point where I actually saw those "stars", you know what I'm talking about. Those little starbursts that everyone sees when you pushed yourself and it's like miniature fireworks wherever you look. Crazy!! So, I know if anything I at least pushed it today! I did my best during the burpee section, however my arms were so fatigued (and this was also when I was seeing stars) that I had to be safe and take it easy. I slowed it down, and didn't stop.

That's always the key. Don't give up. Don't stop. Take a break, but don't all out stop.

Tomorrow is Combat 45. Right now I'm watching Combat 60 since those start next week! I'm drenched with sweat from this HIIT workout! Everyone have a terrific day!!

Day 8

Combat 30

Exhausted. That's how I felt when I woke up this morning. I wanted to be up at 7, but forgot to set my alarm so I was up at 8. No big deal, right? So I make my breakfast and give it time to settle. While I'm waiting, my energy level is not changing. I am feeling so depleted. Maybe it was due to the yard work I did on my day off yesterday? I'll tell you, you don't realize how much your back and arms are involved in weed eating until you've done LMC for a week straight and then try to weed eat your whole yard!!

So, I take a nap.

Get up at 10:15, and realize that the nap helped me ever so slightly. I made a cup of black coffee and popped in Combat 30, knowing that I needed to get my workout in and that there would be no more minutes added to the day, so I needed to quit waiting and start moving.

I don't know if it was the coffee or the nap.

I.
was.
pumped.

I went at that workout harder than I've done the past week. Granted, I fatigued a lot faster and had trouble finishing strong, but I did finish!!

It's nice to chronicle my journey through this. I haven't looked back at the older posts, but I know it will be a crazy read when it's all said and done. I am determined to finish this program. I've made it 2 weeks through my other Beachbody products and then had injury or something else get in my way of finishing.

I will finish.

Day 6/7

Combat 30 and Rest Day

Just updating for posterity sake. Combat 30 went a lot better than the first time, more than likely because I'm already feeling stronger than before, and that I knew the moves coming up. Having some balance issues with my right leg, but it's nothing that can't improve as time goes on. I'm getting better form, learning to throw punches with my torso turning which has exercised my obliques and abdominals a lot more than the first time I did the workout. All in all, was a good week for exercising. Took the rest day to catch up on some work, and of course prep meals for the upcoming week!

Day 4/5

Rest Day / HIIT 2: Shock Plyo

One thing I can definitely say that I needed and earned was my rest day on day 4! I'm so used to programs that have 6 or 7 days a week working you out, that to have 2 days off a week during LMC is just a blessing. It makes it so much better for muscle recovery for those of us (like me) who are rather out of shape and getting back into the groove of things!

Today I made it through the HIIT 2: Shock Plyo. Legs were killing me, and boy I was out of breath within the first 5 minutes! Modified, pushed, and even did some of the normal workout movements where my body permitted me! While it felt like such a long workout, at the end I was like "oh, it's already over?" and was grateful for the stretching as I am at the end of every workout!

Nutrition has been on point, need to go to the grocery store tomorrow and then meal plan again on Sunday!!

Everyone have a terrific weekend!

Stay with the fight,
Dustin

Day 3

Combat 45

Longer, more sore, and exhausted. Need to get heading to work, but I will (hopefully) be able to update when I get back home.

Side note: Oh the sore legs. Oh. lol.

Update

So, definitely grateful that I have a rest day from LMC tomorrow! My legs are lead. It hurts to sit, to stand, and to walk. That's the feeling of change, I'm sure; however it doesn't make it any the less painful!

This too shall pass, and I'll be stronger because I pushed through it!

Stay with the fight!

Day 2

HIIT 1: Power

Successful workout for day 2, albeit I'm rather sore from day 1. Specifically in the upper back, I guess from throwing all of those punches in Combat 30!

HIIT 1 actually is more like LMP, in that you do a good bit of weight training during the first half of the exercise; including dead lifts, bench press, and rows.

I had some troubles today, specifically my right hip locked up during some of the squats. I don't know if it was a cramp, a muscle that was just being overused, or something entirely different. I sat and tried to stretch it, massage it, and do what I could to make it feel better. I let the DVD run, because they were on exercises that I had to use my hips for (squat jumps) and I just couldn't squat. It finally alleviated and I took the rest of the workout with the modifier, making sure to do my best to avoid injury!

Workout all in all was good, I do enjoy the combat workouts more at the moment than the HIIT, but hey, it got my heart rate up, it worked out muscles, and I definitely feel it a good bit in my legs!

Day 3 is tomorrow, which is Combat 45.

The hardest part about tomorrow?

I have to wake up and do my workout about 3-4 hours earlier than I have been in the past few days. Here's to being up with the sun!

Day 1

Combat 30

Needless to say, that was overall fun, quick, and good for my body!!

As with anything new, there was some stumblin' and bumblin' on my part, however I did make it through the entire workout. At times, I had to stop as I got a slight bit lightheaded and needed to dial it back a bit and catch my breath. Chalk that up to being overweight and out of shape.

I've done Les Mills Pump before, which is basically weight-lifting at a crazy intensity level.

Les Mills Combat is reminding me a bit of Turbo-Jam and Turbofire, but with a lot more focus on the martial arts and less on the purely "kickboxing cardio" that Chalene brings to the table. Not that either is better than the other, but this seems to be locking with me a bit more. (At least, for today)

Nutrition is still going strong, glad I did prep my meals in advance as that helps out for the week. Now to just figure out how to get time to eat them. I do not get a break at work unless I have at minimum 7.5 hours scheduled, and usually I have 7 scheduled per day (30 minutes keeps me from having 30 minutes for a lunch...seem backwards to you too?). So, we will see how I do with eating at work. I'll get all of my meals in, albeit they may not be so evenly spaced as I would like.

Tomorrow is HIIT:Power. For those who have not run across this acronym, HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training.

The obligatory first post!

Welcome to anyone and everyone who is viewing my blog! My intent for this blog is to chronicle my journey through fitness with Les Mills Combat for the next 60 days. I have attempted things like this in the past, and have always met with opposition and eventually have not completed the program.

I am going to do everything in my power to prevent that from being how this story ends.

So, a little bit about me:

I am about to turn 30 here at the end of April. I have held many positions/job titles/etc. throughout my few years in the "real world", most currently I work in retail while going to school full-time for my Master of Business Administration degree. I have a terrific girlfriend and a 12 year old black lab, and the most supportive family and friends and (fraternity) brothers anyone could ask for!

For those who don't know, Les Mills Combat (or LMC) is based in mixed martial arts. Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Ju Jitsu, etc. are all part of the program. Day 1 starts tomorrow, with 5 workouts per week.

Nutrition is going to be key, and as I no longer work 12 hour set shifts I needed to plan ahead. My girlfriend and I prepared our meals ahead of time for this week, so that alleviates some stress of a program such as this. Needless to say, it is going to be a drastic change physically, nutritionally, and emotionally.

I have been overweight as long as I can remember, however when I look back on pictures of a younger "me" (age 5-6 ish) I realize that I wasn't born overweight. I didn't have a genetic predisposition to being bigger. I have developed habits that brought me to this point, and therefore I need to change what I've done for so long so that I can be around to live that much LONGER!

This program is offered through Beachbody, and while they have message boards and terrific support systems over there, I needed a place that I felt was mine and mine alone to place my thoughts for my journey.

Here's to a new start, and looking into the future

Kia Kaha!
